The Missing Cup
Leonardo da Vinci spent three years of dedication to painting The
Lord’s Last Supper. He was determined that it would be his greatest work.
Before unveiling the painting in public, he decided to show it to a friend
for whose opinion he valued with great respect.
The friend graciously began to praise the painting. "The cup in Jesus’ hand", he said, "is especially beautiful." Da Vinci was disappointed and at once began to paint out the cup. Amazed at Da Vinci’s actions, the friend asked for an explanation. "Nothing," replied Da Vinci, "must distract from the figure of Christ."
Da Vinci focused entirely on Christ by removing the cup. Having removed the cup, Da Vinci had to do something with the hand of Jesus that was already outstretched. The left hand of Jesus was already outstretched as if to bless and command. Now both of His hands were outstretched to bless.
Christ left this world in Acts:1: 9, from the Mount of Olive with "uplifted hands,." Today His hands are lifted up to bless each of us. His uplifted hands speak of victory over His enemies and His power and right to bless His people.
The painting of Da Vinci’s "Last Supper," appears with the hands of Jesus empty and is a message for us today. We are not to let anything in our life distract us from the image of Jesus Whom we represent. We are not to let our words, our behavior, or our attitudes distract from His glory and image. When people see us or do business with us and talk with us, they need to see Jesus and when they leave our presence acknowledge that they have been in His presence.
Beautiful as the cup was, Da Vinci centered and focused upon Jesus. He is the real focus of life. Let Him radiate through you!
