Don't lose your song
Years ago, at a Christian Education Convention in Orlando, Florida, one of our key-note speakers preached a sermon entitled: "Don’t Lose Your Song". I don’t remember much of his sermon, but I do remember that his message centered around our ability and strength to sing God’s song from our hearts even in the midst of hardships and circumstances.
God has given to each of us " a song in our souls and the ability to sing it." We may not have the talent or courage to stand before people and sing, but at anytime and under all kinds of circumstances God can release "that song" in our hearts. It 's a song of hope - when hope seems gone. A song of strength, when we feel weak. It’s a song of joy when there is nothing to rejoice about. You have a God-given song in your soul - sing it under all circumstances. It will be light in darkness and joy in your sorrow.
I read a story of a woman who had a canary that could sing. One day while cleaning his cage with a vacuum cleaner, she accidentally sucked the canary down the hose into the vacuum cleaner. She immediately cut it off and opened it up and found him sitting there all dirty and ruffled. She washed him, dried him and put him back into the cage. Later, a friend asked, how is your canary? She said, " he’s fine, but he just sits there and doesn’t sing anymore." The trauma of the vacuum cleaner had taken his song. Such an ordeal for him had taken the joy out of him.
Sometimes, we are that way. We sing when things are going well. But because of some trial, hardship, or trauma, or even the death of a loved one: we lose our song. But the marvel of God’s grace is that regardless of past or present experiences, God gives us a song that we can sing through at all times. Why? Because we know that through Him, things will change for the better.
At times, when darkness settles upon the earth and the singing of the daylight birds are silenced: you will hear a sweet, melodious song from the nightingale. It is never too dark that you cannot have a song. The Psalmist said, "with my song, I will praise Him." In Psalm 42:8, the Psalmist said, "in the day time the Lord will command His loving kindness, and in the night His song shall be with me." In your darkest hour, just open your soul to God and begin to sing His song to Him. Again in Psalm 77:6, he said, " I call to remembrance my song in the night."
Singing is also a spiritual weapon of warfare against Satan and his emissaries. In II Chronicles 20, the Israelites were faced with a great multitude that had come to war against them. Jehoshaphat prayed and sought God’s directions. The Lord gave an unusual command and line up for battle. He appointed singers who would go before the army singing the praises of God. In II Chronicles 20:22, "when they begin to sing and to praise: the Lord set an ambush against them. In verse 24, it says "that none escaped." It was the song of the Lord that won the battle. When Satan thinks he has you surrounded, discouraged and defeated: just start singing and praising God. It will confuse him and defeat his purpose.
Don’t let anything or anyone steal your song. Keep on singing. God bless you!
